Flow…New Work

I tend to work in bunches, on several paintings at one time…. A lot of people ask me where I get creative ideas. I don’t think you get them…I think it’s a muscle. You keep on and keep on and one day it’s like turning on a faucet…you get a few drips and then the next day it’s overflowing and etc. It seems to me that it’s about getting more and more in touch with yourself. That’s not just a cliché….the more you practice (copy, learn muscle memory, etc) the closer you can come to just letting “you” flow down a brush or pencil or pen onto the page. That’s my take on it for what it’s worth.

Breaking out

It’s okay to break away from who you thought you were….who you decided you would be at a certain age.  It’s okay to let go of that person in your mind and just be who you are.  It isn’t always comfortable or easy.  But in the end, I’m pretty sure it’s for the best.  Journaling is a good way to do that for me.  I often get these messages , from myself ,when I’m in the flow and not thinking very much.

Life truths…

I was watching Caroline Myss on Oprah this weekend.  She said something pretty amazing.  She said that a lot of people are chasing a life that wasn’t meant to be theirs.  Basically she said that we had a soul contract and that we got here and got distracted,  by the “American Dream” or “American Idol”.  Basically she was saying that when you’ve done all you know how to do and it still doesn’t work…that it wasn’t your path to begin with.  That’s why you lost your way. I had to sit with that one for awhile.  I understood exactly what she was talking about.  But…lol…..if you know when you wake up in the morning that all you want to do is create art, then, you’re an artist.  However; possibly that’s not the main thing.  Maybe it’s a hobby.  Or maybe it sort of leads into what you’re meant to be doing.  Don’t know.  Don’t care…la, la, la, la.  Yes I did put my fingers in my ears and sing.

Then in a lucid, adult moment I did have to consider this truth.  I find it very difficult to see a truth and then ignore it.  Well, I can ignore it but I’m only pretending to ignore it.  Everyone may think I am ignoring it, but I’m not really.  I’m usually meditating on it.  Or letting it marinate.  One or the other. So then I was left with that idea and it was sort of depressing…I won’t lie.  Artists spend truly amazing amounts of time practicing.  It’s hard work whethor you know it or not.  Focusing on details, finding materials, paying for materials, looking at trends, ignoring trends, trying different things to get out of the box, visually portraying your feelings, puttting it all out there to be judged, ignoring judgements and criticisms from family and well meaning friends, etc. etc. In the end, after many hours, many dollars, many lessons, you are left with voluminous amounts of artwork staring back at you from every corner of your home and studio. Some good, some bad, and some occasionally great.(  As a matter of fact, my daughter asked me recently “if something happens to you, what should I do with all of it?  I mean there’s too much for me to keep all of it”!)

Now what?   Dang it!  Because… just because you learn a truth doesn’t mean you act on it.  Am I right? You know and I know that I’m probably not right.  I hate it when that happens.

What a beautiful Place…

I’ve been thinking alot about Abundance too…how to manifest it.  What it means to me, why it’s important.  I don’t just mean money…although, money is just a form of energy like abundance.  But more importantly, what it means to have an abundant life.  I was brought up to work 8-5  or 8-until whenever.  My generation was taught that hard work=abundance, success. But, after 9-11, the economy changed and a lot of us were not flexible enough to change with it.

A lot of us have been re-thinking the American Dream.  Just look around.  Is it really important to have things, instead of fellowship and integrity, and memories with your family.  Can you do both?  Can we give our children an education and still live our life outside of work?  Can we “go green” so that our abundance can be passed onto our children and grandchildren.  Not just in America but all over the world?  Can we pass on peace and prosperity instead of war and pollution?  I don’t know and the truth is….if I did know I would be queen of the world.  Since I’m not, you can bet that I, like so many people, am plodding along trying to figure it out in the time I have here.

I wonder..what sort of intellectual and emotional abundance it would take America to change our projectory, re-group and do the right thing.  The things we all know we are going to have to do, but haven’t because we’re waiting on someone else to start.  Here are some questions that I have…you probably have your own.  Feel free to comment.

1.  Do we really need so much technology?  Especially at the expense of some poor child in China, or at the expense of the earth? Or at the expense of our interactions as human beings?

2.  Do people really need two houses when some people don’t even have one? Or a 100,000.00 car?  Shouldn’t we have the right to buy those things if we can afford to?  How can we have our cake and eat it too?

3. How much is enough? Really…after a certain point don’t you have to ask?

4.Just because you can…does it mean you should?

5.  Does might make right? Or does only right make right.  You know as in…”do the right thing?

6. Should we be proud of ourselves or proud of our things.?

7.Do we even have an obligation to help each other.  I think we do, no matter what.  But some people think you only help those who help themselves.  What does that even mean?

8. Is left brain stuff more important than right brain stuff like art, music, literature or say farming…Really, I wonder where people think their food comes from.  A calculator?  What happens when you don’t reward artisans, farmers, and craftspeople longterm, in this world?

9.  Why should we have the right to eat ourselves into obesity when so many go to bed hungry?

10. And, lastly, because it’s not lost on me that some people can’t even ask questions like this because of the country they were born into, is it right for me to be free when so many people are not.  And what should I do about it?

Abundance…what a beautiful place it would be with friends!
